Huawei, the global technology leader today confirmed its support for the Cambridge Wireless International Conference (‘CWIC’) as a platinum sponsor of the event. Huawei said it could use its global reach to help boost the growing Cambridge tech hub as part of its ongoing commitment to the UK.

Huawei is celebrating its 20th year in the UK and has been a member of Cambridge Wireless since 2014. Cambridge Wireless is an international community for companies involved in the research, development and application of wireless and mobile, internet, semiconductor and software technologies, with more than 1000 technology companies ranging from major network operators and device manufacturers to innovative start-ups and universities.

In a video message to CWIC, Paul Scanlan, Huawei CNBG Chief Technology Officer, said: “We believe 5G is a platform for transformation but we can only realise the benefits 5G can bring through a combination of education, collaboration and trust. This enables us to balance innovation with commercialisation. We need to do this because of the opportunities 5G presents in transforming industries – it can save and improve millions of lives through Use Cases like Remote Patient Monitoring, Virtual Consultation and Connected Ambulances. We could improve manufacturing efficiency by billions of dollars by adopting 5G in Predictive Maintenance, Precision Monitoring and using Augmented Reality for training and maintenance purposes.  Perhaps the most surprising result is 5G’s role in decelerating about a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide through a combination of rapid deployment of 5G Mobile Networks, connecting traffic infrastructure, logistical optimization and 5G’s role is key in creating a foundation for a highly connected, decentralised energy system. And we know that not a single company or country can do this alone, we need to work globally and across industries to make all of these happen. We need collaboration. This is why Cambridge Wireless bringing people together from different industries is so important and why Huawei wants to support it.”

Simon Mead, CEO of Cambridge Wireless, said: “Cambridge Wireless is dedicated to driving innovation through a collaborative community of companies involved in the research, development and application of wireless and mobile technologies. Cambridge tech ecosystem is fast becoming a global powerhouse of high-tech and we’re delighted to partner with Huawei to help support and further accelerate the growth of innovative organisations within this community and beyond.”

Speaking at CWIC, Joey Pan, Huawei’s Director of Industry, said: “We see Cambridge as a leading centre for technological innovation and open collaboration. We share the same drive to push the boundaries of what can be achieved and through our extensive network and market access across the globe, we believe we can help them to new and exciting heights. Huawei is committed to be a strong partner to the industry, and we are here to offer our expertise and technology to partners to promote more connections and more innovation.”

In June this year Huawei announced a new £1 billion R&D and manufacturing centre to be based on 500 acres of land in Cambridgeshire, locating 400 jobs there. The new facility, a state-of-the-art R&D and manufacturing centre, will be located in the heart of the UK's ‘Silicon Fen’ and focus on researching, developing, and manufacturing optoelectronics products.
